Contributions

AccomacRoots is a non-profit website associated with the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance (CCA). To obtain a tax deduction benefit for our supporters, contributions are channeled through CCA on a dollar-for-dollar basis; there is no administrative overhead.

A number of projects are planned (or in the works) for the coming year, and our ability to accomplish these goals is totally dependant upon the generosity of our supporters. Research on African-American families on Chincoteague Island and in Accomack County is a difficult and time-consuming task. Records are hard to find and access. Conducting this research, maintaining our website, and responding to requests for information do incur costs.

If you desire to assist in this endeavor, your contributions would be deeply appreciated. You may have your name mentioned on this page or remain annonymous.

All contributions are tax deductible through our affiliation with CCA, a non-profit (501c3), tax-exempt organization. If you wish separate verification for tax purposes, please notify us by email of your contribution.

Contributions can be made by clicking on the above button. You can use either your credit card OR your PayPal account. You do not need to be a member of PayPal to use your credit card. Just enter an amount and click on the "Continue" botton at the bottom of the PayPal screen.
In either case, your contribution will be processed through PayPal directly to the Accomac Roots/CCA account. If you wish a receipt by mail, please include your address. Otherwise, print the screen notice at the end of the donation process.

____________________

(1) Christ Union Baptist Church was active from 1876 - 1961. Vacant since then, the building fell into disrepair and finally was torn down in the 1990's. The heirs of the last members of the church still own the property, and it is our goal to erect a small monument on the site commemorating the existence of this historic structure and its congregation.

(2) Many of the metal markers for graves in Christ Union Baptist Church Cemetery and Odd fellows Cemetery are damaged or missing. This ongoing project is designed to repair some of the existing markers and place new markers on graves as they are identified by family and friends.

(3) A number of important black records, for example the Accomack Register of Free Negroes 1785 - 1863, are available only on microfilm. While these resources can be viewed at some libraries, having the tapes on hand would significantly speed lookups. Through an arrangement this year with Maryland Micrographics, Inc., and with the permission of the Accomac County Clerk and the Library of Virginia, we have begun the process of scanning these microfilms as digital images.

(4) We are ever on the lookout for those valuable geneological and historical books that have gone out of print. As they become available, we will add them to the collection, thus expanding resources availabe to our users via lookups. Down the road, we hope to find a space where we can setup a library/research room on the Island.

Total Contributions as of 1/1/07: $1,500
